A POPULAR Cockermouth bistro is downsizing and moving to new premises.

Manon Plouffe opened Wild Zucchinis more than seven years ago - and has not looked back.

"I'm really proud of what Wild Zucchinis turned out to be. It's what we set off to do, when there was only a seed in my head," said Manon.

Over the years she has built up a reputation as the provider of delicious, healthy wholesome meals and snacks.

She has supported lots of community ventures as well as opened up her bistro on Christmas Day to cater for people who were on their own or perhaps could not afford to pay for lots of festive food.

During Covid, like everyone else, Manon was forced to close the bistro but that did not stop her creating takeaway meals, which proved a big hit.

She now plans to focus more on takeaways and will be leasing out her Station Street shop and moving into smaller premises on Main Street.

"We are slimming down but not going," said Manon.

"We are moving to smaller premises, focusing on takeaways and family meals that can be ordered for the weekend. We will carry on with outside catering."

The change has been prompted by a new addition to Manon's family, her first grandchild, Ruby-May.

"She's three months old and absolutely delightful," said the proud grandma.

"It's time for a change and becoming a grandma was the trigger.

"I did not have support as a young mother. My family were in Canada and not able to offer support. I want to enjoy my daughter Saskia and her partner Lee's lovely girl."

The Station Street venue will close at the end of November. Manon has lots of happy memories of her time there.

"What we have created here is a hub for the community, somewhere for people to enjoy and relax.

"There's a lovely familial energy and a great sense of friendship. I've made so many friends and will miss our regular customers, the banter and laughter, but I feel I've created something special and that's a great legacy to leave."

The new tenant has not yet been named.

"I cannot say who or when but it shall have a new lease of life. And I believe our customers will be equally happy with the new cafe that's coming. They are similar to my ethos and philosophy of offerings," said Manon.

She's planning a big auction after the venue has closed, with some of the proceeds going to a local charity.

"Everything has to go, there is lots of lovely Wild Zucchinis memorabilia, decor and catering equipment.

"Roland the coffee machine is coming with us but Monica the salad bar is up for grabs," said Manon, who has names for all her bistro appliances.

She plans to open her new premises early next year. "I'm sad to be leaving but change is good and I'm really excited about the future," said Manon.
