WORKINGTON Town Council have helped out and animal sanctuary after this years spooky season.

The town council took the novel idea of sending pumpkins to the AniMel Sanctuary for it's residents to enjoy.

The pumpkins, that would otherwise have gone to landfill have fed cows, duck, pigs and chickens at the AniMel haven.

Its helped the people of Workington to give something back to their animal community.

As well as the town council many other people in the community have offered up their donations to the shelter, with more than 300 pumpkins being delivered to AniMel already.

Mel James, the owner of the sanctuary said: "We are so grateful for everything we get I think last year we got about 300 and this year we have already beaten it

"It means so much, we are so grateful for any donation that we get, especially at the moment you know times are hard and any leftover food or anything, other than it going to landfill we are quite happy to take it , we're forever grateful."

The pumpkins have gone down a storm with the residents at AniMel, with everybody from the little dear to the highland cows getting in on the Hallo'ween fun.

Mel said: "The cows, we were laughing at them yesterday, they were just pulling the insides out of them and they were just hanging out of their mouths."

"They love them the pigs especially, there absolutely loving them

The town council dropped their first donation off to the haven on Tuesday and are expected at AniMel again on Friday to deliver more of the Hallo'ween treats to it's inhabitants.

A spokesperson for the Town Council said: "We saw on Facebook that there were a lot of posts about what to do with your pumpkins once Halloween had finished and although people have been putting them in the park for the local wildlife, it can actually be very dangerous for them, especially hedgehogs.

"We therefore decided to be a pumpkin drop off point for people and donate the pumpkins to a local rescue centre, AniMel Haven for the animals there. We’ve already dropped off around 20 pumpkins this week and have more to deliver on Friday. Please get your pumpkins to the Workington Town Council Community Centre on Princess Street by 10.30am on Friday 5th November and we will take them to the centre."
