PLANS have been revealed to create a motorhome and caravan site at an Allerdale farm.

Allerdale Borough Council has received an application for planning permission to create a touring motorhome site at Meadow Farm in Aspatria.

The request for planning permission involves land adjacent to The Big White House at Greengill, "a well established four star self catering accommodation."

Formerly a residential care home, The Big White House now serves large groups of up to 24 people.

And Mr Carr of Skiddaw View Holiday Park Limited has now applied for planning permission to expand the offering at Greengill.

In their Design and Access Statement, the agent, Day Cummins Limited said: "Staycation has become more popular even before Covid travel restrictions. Caravan and motorhome ownership has increased dramatically recently and self contained rural sites away from the holiday hotspots and crowds has become more desirable."

The applicant believes they are well placed to continue brining tourists to West Cumbria, benefitting the economy.

"The site is close to Cockermouth, the Western Lakes and the Solway Coast making it ideal for visitors."

Planning permission is sought for 11 motorhome/caravan pitches, toilet/shower facilities and on-site warden accommodation.

Day Cummins Limited said that an on-site warden's office would be essential to appease security concerns.

They said: "Site security and control of visitor occupancy, particularly in a rural setting, is a big issue, especially when catering for large parties such as The Big White House.

"The best form of security is an on-site presence and hence the need for an on-site warden."

Gilcrux Parish Council has raised concerns about the proposal after discussing it at their meeting on January 19.

Trevor Gear, parish clerk, told the Allerdale Council case officer: "Whilst they acknowledge there are benefits to the local economy, they have serious concerns regarding cars towing caravans along the narrow rural roads, in particular through Bullgill with the sharp bends and steep hill."

Day Cummins Limited said: "The site uses an existing access serving the Big White House and the site is laid out around a loop road with one-way system.

"The Big White House is already separated with boundary fencing and gate access which will remain and is enhanced with planting."
