AFTER a hard day’s graft, the thought of having to prepare a meal may be quite daunting.

With companies like Just Eat and Foodhub releasing apps for mobile phones, nowadays it is even easier to order a takeaway.

The chip shop remains a takeaway heavyweight, with over 250 million fish and chip meals sold each year in the UK.

The Times and Star asked its readers on Facebook who they think are the 10 best chippies in the Allerdale area. In no particular order, readers chose:

  1. Superfish – The Pow Street chippy featured prominently in the list. Customers claim that they have never had a bad meal there, with some stating that it’s the best Cumbria has to offer.

2. Pearl Garden – Found on Maryport’s Wood Street, the Chinese takeaway also includes fish and chips in its menu of around 200 items, but residents feel that it holds up amongst the rest of what is on offer.

3. Elbra Chippy – The Ellenborough establishment has been praised by its customers for always providing a pleasant atmosphere and their generous portions.

4. Moorclose Chippy – As well as receiving praise for their affordable prices, the Westfield Drive chippy has been given the thumbs up by visitors who have enjoyed their homemade steak pie and Cumberland sausage.

5. Main Street Fisheries – Some call the Cockermouth chippy the ‘best in the town’. Expect to see a regular queue of guests waiting to pick up their dinner outside the premises.

6. Pedro’s – The takeaway on Workington’s King Street pride themselves in being the only takeaway in town that serves not only fish and chips but also pizzas, burgers and kebabs.

7. Cross Quays – Residents love visiting the Maryport takeaway and taking their food to the coastline to take in the view. Watch out for the ravenous seagulls who may want to pinch a chip!

8. Kowloon – Another Chinese takeaway, the Seaton restaurant provides a variety of battered goods alongside usual Oriental favourites.

9. Grasslot Fish Shop – Located on Maryport’s Garner Street, the chippy has received constant positive reviews online, with one customer making sure he gets his suppers every third Friday!

10. Jim’s Plaice – The fourth Maryport establishment on our list is seen as the perfect accompaniment after a trip to the town’s Maritime Museum.
