Readers have been reacting to the news that the Prime Minister has paid a fine for breaking his Government's own rules.

The fine was issued in relation to a get together celebrating the disgraced leader's birthday on June 19, 2020, amid an investigation into lockdown parties at Downing Street.

The Prime Minister’s wife, Carrie Johnson, has also paid the fine she was issued for being in attendance of the same gathering saying she “apologises unreservedly”, a spokesperson for Mrs Johnson has said.

More than 50 referrals for fines have been made off the back of lockdown parties at Downing Street and Whitehall, Police have said.

The Metropolitan Police said at least 30 more fixed penalty notices will be issued by the ACRO Criminal Records Office.

This is up from the 20 referrals for fixed-penalty notices (FPN) the force said had been made at the end of March.

Scotland Yard said it was “making every effort to progress this investigation at speed”, with the possibility of more fines to come.

Readers were furious.

David Steel said: "A 'full apology' is so meaningless from Johnson especially as he told Parliament that no rules were broken and still insisted on saying that in private.

"An apology from this man is just another bit of PR to save his lying and corrupt neck.

"That's all.

"There's no genuine remorse behind it.

"And remember that the only time that a Tory will feign remorse is when they get caught.

"Otherwise, they are laughing at you behind your back."

Alan Wright said: "This is a terrible day for British politics and a reduction in the standard of leadership.

"They can all lie and break the law and just apologise then move on, disgraceful."

Mark Ritson said: "Vote them out, in May and in the next general election, we can sack him and those others who broke the law and who protect him, it's that simple."

Joan Hully said: "The man is a compulsive liar, he doesn't know what it was like to lose someone and not be able to say goodbye, it's a disgrace it's shameful."
