A CUMBRIAN school has expressed their pride for former pupil Ben Stokes- after the news that he will take his place as England captain.

The star cricketer was named as England test captain earlier this week, taking to social media to describe his appointement as a 'proud day' for him and his family.

Stokes, who grew up in Cumbria as a child attended Cockermouth School and was a member of the town's cricket club.

Cockermouth School sent 'huge congratulations' to the cricketer, saying they were 'very proud' of their former pupil.

In a post on social media, Cockermouth School said : "Huge congratulations to our former student @benstokes38 as he is named England test captain.

"There is no bigger honour in cricket and it is recognition for his excellence and commitment throughout an outstanding career.

"We are very proud of your achievement Ben and wish you well."
