A popular agricultural show which attracts thousands of people every year will go ahead next month.

The 170th Cockermouth Show was originally due to take place on August 1, 2020.

It had to be cancelled that year, and last year, due to the pandemic.

The organisers were delighted to announce plans for this year's event, which will take place on Saturday, July 30.

Lorton farmer Ian Armstrong took over as chairman three years ago and is looking forward to his first show.

"It's exciting. It's a shame we've not been able to run it for so long but everyone is looking forward to it now," he said.

"We have had lots of interest and support."

The show has been running since 1849 and has a committee of more than 100 people working behind the scenes to create a great day out on the showfield at The Fitz, on Low Road.

They are hoping lots of people will support the event.

"We offer entertainment for everyone, an action packed day for all the family," said secretary Norma Boyes.

Judging of animals starts at 9.30am. A huge range of livestock classes will be hotly contested by a top range of cattle, sheep, goats, horses and poultry.

There will also be lots of horse and pony classes, as well as demonstrations by working sheep dogs and sheep shearers.

The busy industrial tent with its fantastic selection of crafts and cooking is always a crowd puller.

The terrier racing also attracts lots of support, as does the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling.

There will be lots of trade, food and drink stalls and a range of vintage machinery on show.

Entry is £8 (£5 for young and old, under 5s free), family tickets are £20 (two adults, two children).

The Grand Parade starts about 2pm.
