WITH costs already allegedly rising by £3million, Maryport Town council is warning against a 'piecemeal' job of regenerating the town.

The cost of the £12million development has risen to £15million because of escalating inflation and there are concerns that these costs could rise even further.

Maryport mayor, Peter Kendall, told a council meeting this month that Allerdale council, leading on the development, must ensure that the rising costs do not undermine the entire project.

He said it was essential that there were some completed projects rather than several being half-finished.

An Allerdale spokeswoman said final costings have not yet been finalised. She said. "The final costings for all the planned regeneration projects in Maryport are still being finalised.

"We will manage and mitigate against fluctuating costs of materials which are affecting the construction industry internationally.

"The council is totally committed to all its initiatives in the town."

Major redevelopments include building a swimming pool at the Wave Centre, turning Christ Church into a maritime museum and the re-purposing of the former Carlton cinema.
