The success of the first car show for over a decade may have secured a Rotary event on the social calendar.

Maryport Rotary which, like many clubs, is facing diminishing membership, decided to revive the classic car show that used to be an annual feature in the town.

It was held last weekend and the fact that it was on the same date as Maryport's new Taste of the Sea festival had member crossing their fingers that this was a gamble that would work.

And it did. The Rotary Club came up with the idea of linking the two events.

Alistair Grey had two heritage buses on show, but another was used to ferry the public to and from the food festival.

Hundreds filed through the Netherhall Rugby Club grounds to inspect the 52 classic and vintage cars on show.

One of the mechanical stars was a 1963 Austin Mini van which appeared in the popular TV show Heartbeat, which was set in the 60s.

The van is owned by Barrie Bryce of Distington.

Other vehicles will include a 1985 Chevy Day van G20.

Rotary's community and vocational services lead, Geoff Brinicombeand wife Pat, who is club secretary,  got so interested in this project that they bought themselves an 18-year-old MG.

They said the success of this show meant it is almost certain that the car show will return again - "and, in the meantime, we would like to thank all those who helped especially Netherhall Rugby Club for the venue and the help they have given us."
