PRISON bosses have revealed what inmates at HMP Haverigg will be tucking into on Christmas Day.

Turkey and pigs in blankets will be on offer to inmates at Cumbria’s only prison along with a variety of festive delights, according to menus obtained under freedom of information laws.

Other options on the day will include salmon, spinach and cream cheese en croute.

Prisoners at the open prison will start the day off with breakfast options of toast, porridge or cereals before the main event at lunchtime.

Additional options for Christmas dinner will include chicken korma curry or a vegan schnitzel.

Everything will be served with roast and parsley potatoes, Brussels sprouts, baby carrots, cabbage, parsnips and gravy.

The inmates will finish off with Christmas pudding and brandy sauce.

Options for tea will include ham salad and lamb, vegan or pork sausage rolls.

Pudding will be served in the form of mince pies and Christmas cake.

For Boxing Day prisoners will tuck into a selection of brunch options including cereal and a cooked breakfast.

For tea there will be a choice of battered fish, cheeseburger, vegan breaded burger or a festive turkey dinner slice.

In the FOI response, a spokesman for His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service said: "Meals in prisons over Christmas are paid for from within the existing budget and at no extra cost to the taxpayer.

"Prison rules require that prisoners are provided with three meals a day that are varied and nutritious and that meet the religious, cultural, and medical needs of all.

"HMPPS is working closely with catering managers and suppliers to ensure best value for money at a time of rising food prices."

It was announced in 2019 that the former category C prison was to become a category D open facility.

The prison offers offenders approaching the end of their sentence an improved transition into the community following a tough risk assessment.

HMP Haverigg is on the site of an old RAF training centre, converted to a prison in 1967.
