A GOLF committee is hosting competition to raise money for a cancer charity.

Members of the Workington Golf Committee are hoping Saturday, May 13 will be a perfect day to 'tee off' and raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

The committee is hoping for sunshine after last year's tournament was cancelled due to rain.

However, despite this, the club raised £5000 on the charity night - which they hope to do even better this year.

For one of the committee members, Ian Andrew, the charity holds a place in his heart after he received help from them in a very dark time.

The 68-year-old from Workington said: "I am a prostate cancer survivor.

"I was diagnosed in 2014 and two years ago I was given the all-clear.

"Since then I have always been interested in raising money for charity.

"In 2015, my daughter, myself and her friends all took part in a 10k run which was a little bit like the gladiator's challenge and since then I have always tried to do something each year.

"Just to give back to them for what they did for me."

Ian reflects on his past charity events which have grown into bigger occasions.

He said:" At first, it has always been small events, which raise a little bit of money but then someone said to me 'why don't you go for something bigger'.

"So we did.

"Last year was our first golf tournament and everything was set but the weather.

"We didn't think it was that bad but when we saw the first group out on it - we had to call them back in and cancel the tournament.

"Although the tournament was cancelled - our night time event wasn't and it was brillliant.

"We managed to raise £5,000 and the club did great from its side too.

"We are hoping to raise more money in than last year and to get a good game of golf.

"Additionally we are hoping for more players and sponsors to get involved for this great cause.
