School of Rock: The Musical at The Carnegie Theatre in Workington

The Next Generation School of Rock: The Musical will be performed by the Workington Amateur Operatic Society at The Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre this week.

Front man and director of the musical, Tony McGee, is from Workington and will perform the role of central character Dewey Finn.

Tony, 37, said: "I've always liked the Jack Black film the musical is based on. I've had an interest in music and playing the guitar since my teens and it's a really fun part to play. It's funny, and has a lot of involvement with the junior cast members."

"There's additional music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber who wrote Cats and Phantom of the Opera, so it's got a good composer. Currently, our ticket sales are over 75 per cent for the four performances, so if people want to get tickets, don't hang about."

He said what he has enjoyed most about the role was bringing the live band together on stage.

"Learning all our own instruments and our parts, and putting it together and adding to that the orchestra. All playing together as a live band has been really fun.

"The show is upbeat, and it involves lots of local young members but adults as well and it's going to be really good fun."

Tony said one of the Society's recent performances was Shrek The Musical in October.

"Previously we've done a lot of well known musicals, the junior section have done Les Miserables before, Starlight Express, we've performed Jesus Christ Superstar, Hairspray, lots of really famous Broadway and West End shows. 

"We tend to put two on a year, do one October show and one spring show. 

"More often than not, that's an adult one in October and a junior show in spring, however this show involves both adults and juniors so it's one big society production," Tony said.

School of Rock: The Musical is showing at The Carnegie Theatre in Workington from February 15 until February 18.
