For today's Nostalgia edition we will be taking a look back at the year 1973.

We are now 50 years on from this time and our part of the country in Allerdale is looking all the more different now.

However, there was still a great deal going on in the world, this was a time when George Foreman defeated Joe Frazier to win the heavyweight world boxing championship, at the 45th Academy Awards, The Godfather won best picture and the Sears Tower in Chicago, United States, is topped-out, becoming the world's tallest building at 1,451 feet.

It was also a time when Leonid Brezhnev addresses the American people on television, becoming the first Soviet leader to do so, a very long total solar eclipse occurs which during the entire second millennium, only seven total solar eclipses exceeded seven minutes of totality and Scottish racing driver Jackie Stewart became World Drivers' Champion when his Tyrrell 003-Cosworth finishes fourth in the 1973 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

There was also a great deal happening here in Workington and Allerdale too. Here at the Times & Star we've searched through our archives to find some of the most fascinating photos from this time. So please enjoy this trip down memory lane with us.

Three of the photos show St Johns' Precinct and Arcade in Workington during 1973, whilst others show Carlisle United playing Workington that same year, a Victorian evening at the Carnegie Theatre and riders of the Workington Speedway Comets.

Other photos show prize winners at the Workington Infirmary Flower Show, Wilson School on Guard Street before it was demolished and miners at the Solway Pit in Workington.
