A dark and overgrown popular pathway in Cockermouth has been transformed by a hard-working town group.

Members of the Rotary Club rolled up their sleeves, pulled on their gloves and spent three days cutting back overgrowth and clearing the path which links Gote Road with Wakefield Road.

Rotarian Val Ayre said: "Cockermouth Town Council had received complaints about the state of the path, so we got permission from the landowner and took it on as a Rotary project.

"It was full of overhanging ivy and bushes making it quite narrow and dark so we have cleared it back and it looks so much better.

"Hopefully people will benefit from it being more open, light and accessible now."

Cumberland Council removed the bags and excess hedge and bush cuttings.

Town mayor Andrew Semple is delighted with the group's latest project.

"I've always know Rotary was there but one of my discoveries as mayor has been what a lot of great things they do, some of which goes unrecognised.

"This a classic example of one of their many great projects which benefit the town.

"Since lockdown more and more people seem to be using our paths. This one has been neglected so it's great to see it looking so good."
