A new wildlife group for young nature detectives starts in Cockermouth next week.

All nature-loving six to 12-year-olds are invited to join Wildlife Watch, set up by Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

It will meet monthly, starting at the Scout Centre, on Tuesday, April 25.

Ruth Alcroft, the trust's education officer, said: “We’re excited to launch this new Wildlife Watch group in Cockermouth.

"It’s a great way for young people to make friends with other nature detectives and to explore nature right on their doorstep.

"In the coming months, we’ll discover creepy crawlies, buzzing bees and butterflies, and explore the woods, making a den and having a go at woodland crafts.

"We may even run the odd trip away."

All the events will be run by trained volunteers who know about the local area and wildlife.

"Anyone who would like to help us run the group would be very welcome too, full training will be given," said Ruth.

Wildlife Watch is the junior branch of The Wildlife Trusts and the UK's leading environmental action club for children and families. There are over 150,000 Wildlife Watch members nationwide, with more than 50 groups in the UK.

Together, they put on over 1,000 events for children and young people each year.

“Sadly, too many of us these days have lost touch with nature," said Ruth.

"Wildlife Watch groups are a great way for young people to explore and take action for wildlife.

"As well as making friends, they’ll discover what amazing creatures can be found on our doorsteps and in our local parks. If you live in a town or a city, you’re still surrounded by wildlife, if you know where to look!”
