An 85-year-old man has taken it upon himself to help clean up Seaton with the help of Workington MP Mark Jenkinson.

The pair recently headed out around Workington to help to clear the streets of litter.

Peter Smith explained that he has been concerned about the amount of litter in the area for some time and has decided to try to tackle the issue himself.

MP Mark Jenkinson said: "It was great to spend a bit of time with Peter tidying up an area of the line between town and Northside.

"I've been out with a lot of our local litter pickers and groups who all do an absolutely amazing job in keeping our towns and villages tidy.

"When I was on Seaton Parish Council as Seaton Borough councilor I used to organise regular clean up days to hot spots in the village.

"We ended up doing lots of planting with putting daffodils in the flower beds and that still continues now that I've moved on which is fantastic, a bit of pride and place never goes a miss."

Mr Smith said: "I was very concerned about the litter problem in Workington in particular and also Maryport, I've been there and people just seem to drop litter all over the place.

"I've been a litter picker for years, I used to pick up litter on the way to the Yearl and there was a lot of litter left there including baby's nappies.

"I've always taken a bag with me, picked up litter, and put it in the next litter bin.

"I got in touch with our MP Mark Jenkinson and we arranged to meet on Wednesday, April 5 and we spent about two hours picking litter on the bank between the Sports Centre and the cricket field in Workington.

"I was very pleased about that, the place looked a lot tidier.

"There's also a problem with people walking their dogs in Curwen Park which I've been opposing for years because I used to be a teacher and I've refereed matches down there."
