A GROUP of Maryport cheerleaders were given a heroes' welcome this weekend after they returned from America as world champions.

People in the town took to the streets to create a welcome home parade for the Cheer Force Knights as they returned from Florida as world champions, beating 87 teams from all over the world in their first international competition.

Proud grandmother of cheerleader Lucie Parker, Julie Armstrong, was at the parade on Tuesday, May 9.

Julie said: “There are no words that can describe how proud I am.

"Those girls and their coaches work their socks off to achieve perfection and that's what they bring to the floor every time they perform.

“It's incredible that they beat another 87 teams to become world champions.

"They deserve it though they are absolutely amazing.”

Talking about the return of the girls, she said: “They are so humble, bless them. I don't think they realise how proud the people of Cumbria are of them. I mean the support shown for these girls is nothing but amazing.

“Not one of them take the praise for themselves though, they a family and that shows on the floor... they trust each other impeccably.

"Their little faces when they got off that bus - was so emotional.”

Head coach at Cheer Force Knights, Maryport Olivia Scholey said: "The girls were amazed by their score more than the win.

"We scored 49.3 / 50 which was 0.7 from a perfect score.

"We went into awards already on cloud nine as that's a score you don't see very often.

"The girls were ecstatic to win, happy tears from everyone.

"The parade was lovely, we didn't know it was happening so was a nice surprise."
