TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular 24-year-old from Workington following his death at the weekend, with ‘a whole town in mourning’.

Michael Jenkins, 24, died on Sunday, June 4. Police Scotland tonight confirmed that he was found with serious injuries in the town of Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. He later died at the scene.

Following the incident, Police Scotland area commander Chief Inspector Sam Buchan said: “Our thoughts are with the deceased man’s loved ones at this difficult time."

A 19-year-old man was arrested and today appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court accused of murder.

Hundreds of people have taken to social media throughout the last week to pay tribute to the man who ‘devoted his time and love’ to many people he cared for, particularly his grandfather who he adored.

Michael attended St Joseph’s High School in Workington throughout his teenage years and had ‘a friendly smile even to those that didn’t know him’.

Michael loved to go fishing when he could and enjoyed boxing. Friends and family have described Michael as ‘like a pirate at heart’, saying the young man could never stay in one place and enjoyed travelling all over.

Since his death, many have taken to social media to pay tribute, with one family member saying the town of Workington has been ‘left in mourning’ following his death.

Paying tribute to Michael, a family member said: “Michael Jenkins, where to start?

“I am so grateful that you were such a massive part of my life for so long, I feel honoured and privileged to be able to call you, my brother.

"There is a whole town in mourning, and the saddest part of all is you probably didn’t realise how loved you were.

“I’d like to tell people the amazing side of Michael, the lad who devoted his time and love to the people he cared for, he would come running whenever you called his name, he would pick you up when you fell, and he was always there to give you a great big cuddle, for whenever needed one.

“You’ll be missed by so many, a son, a brother, an uncle, a soul mate, a friend, a grandson, and a friendly smile even to those that didn’t know him.

“Life wasn’t always kind to you Mike, but you showed the world a lot of kindness, fly high my brother, sleep peacefully, don’t forget to leave the light on for me on the other side...

“We all love you.”
