A safeguarding week at a Cockermouth primary school proved such a success it will become an annual event.

Fairfield Primary School staged the five-day event which involved all of the year groups.

There was a selection of visitors including police, a Cockermouth pharmacist, the NSPCC, fire service and first aiders.

As well as assemblies and workshops, the children engaged in daily reflection on questions linked to safeguarding.

Deputy headteacher and safeguarding lead Jordan Gale said: "The week was a fantastic success with the children engaged and having the opportunity to reflect upon and learn/ recap essential life skills.

"Each and every speaker left with a very positive impression of our school and commented on how incredible the children were. This is now an annual event."

Pharmacist Nat Mitchell, from Allisons Chemist, spoke to the children about medication and harmful drugs.

Year 5 pupils took part in a full day of First Aid with a trained professional, and all passed the accredited First Aid course.

"Safeguarding is our highest priority and happens every minute of every day at Fairfield," said Mr Gale.

"The aim of this week was to showcase some key aspects to the children and to hear clear messages from fellow experts in the safeguarding field.

"We have a comprehensive safeguarding curriculum in place and it was fantastic to see the children’s knowledge of essential life skills and understanding of personal safety shining through."

The fire service shared lots of advice on fire and water safety.

"There was an informative parent workshop, followed by an information session with nursery, who naturally had to test the hoses and explore the engine," said Mr Gale.

Maryport Rescue (Lifeboat) members focused on water and coastal safety.

The NSPCC spoke about abuse and cyber bullying.

A police officer talked to children about staying safe during the summer, covering topics including road safety, criminal damage, anti-social behaviour, stranger danger and water safety.
