A MUCH-LOVED Maryport dance festival, originally set up by three friends who wanted to give something back, has returned to celebrate its 40th year in the town.

The Queen of the Solway dance festival is now a popular event in the dancing world's calendar, bringing people from all over the country to Maryport.

This year the dance festival took place at the Maryport Church of England School from Saturday, May 27 until Tuesday, May 30.

The event was set up by Florence Mulgrew, Sandra Chapman and Joan Nicholson, who felt like they needed a dance event for Maryport.

It has grown in popularity ever since.

Florence Mulgrew passed away a few years ago and, due to ill health from Sandra and Joan, Florence’s daughter Theresa Rodney has now taken over the running of the event, under the watchful eye of the two ladies.

Hundreds of dancers descended on the school to take part in the special celebration.

Theresa thanked all who had been involved in the event, with special thanks to Maryport Town Council for all their support.
