There's masses on offer at this weekend's Cockermouth and District Agricultural Show - and the organisers are hoping lots of people will join in the farming fun.

The 171st show will take place on Saturday, August 5, at The Fitz, Low Road.

There will be the full range of classes, including horse, cattle, sheep, goats, children's pets and foxhounds.

As well as a packed industrial tent, show jumping, terrier racing, sheep shearing demonstrations, a vintage craft tent, Bygones Display tent and beer tent.

There will also be lots of trade stands.

New for this year is the spotted Dutch sheep classes.

Secretary Norma Boyes, who has been involved in the show for 50 years, said: "The classes are well supported. They're a recently imported breed and there seems to be great uptake and popularity in the area."

There are over 100 people on the hard-working committee. President is Joe Marrs, former chairman, who has been associated with the show for over 50 years. His son, Michael is vice chairman and sister-in-law Elizabeth is chair of the ladies committee. Show chairman is Ian Armstrong.

"We have all the usual pre-show hustle and bustle," said Norma.

"Last year trade stands were down about 20 per cent but they have bounced back, reestablishing themselves since Covid.

"Unfortunately there is no poultry because of the avian flu situation."

Industrial entries are up - to 1,300, and there should be more than 100 cattle entries on the field.

"Particularly well supported this year is the young handlers," said Norma.

"It's great to see so many of the next generation getting involved, I was in the young farmers' with some of their grandparents!"

Cumbria Karate Club will be doing a demo for the first time.

A free park and ride will be in place at Lakeland Livestock Mart and a shuttle bus running from Main Street.

In the Main Ring, judging of cattle classes starts at 10am.

The judging of fox hounds and terriers will take place at 12.30pm followed by terrier racing.

Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling is scheduled to start at 1pm.

The grand parade and presentation of prizes will take place at 2.30pm.
