A splash pool, bike store with charging points for electric bikes and an upgraded Wave Centre are all being considered for Maryport.

The cost of these and other projects would come from money that will not be spent on a new swimming pool after Cumberland Council rejected the regeneration idea because of the price of ongoing running costs.

These projects will be dependent on a Project Adjustment Request, which is due to be submitted to the Department for Levelling Up Housing and Communities in the next couple of days.

If accepted, the Maryport regeneration team could go ahead with repurposing the swimming pool money.

In an email to Maryport Council this week, project manager Jeremy Hewitson laid out the revised plans.

The Wave Centre would become an Adventure Centre with soft play, an enhanced gymnasium, and an upgraded Clip 'n' Climb.

A multi-use studio would be incorporated into the Wave and catering facilities will be improved.

An outside events area would be established. The preference is to locate it by the harbourside next to Shiver Me Timbers, subject to negotiation with the Harbour Authority.

If no agreement could be reached, the outdoor space could be established in the Wave car park.

Equipment at Shiver Me Timbers, the harbourside playground, would be upgraded and a splash park installed - something that has been wanted for many years.

A promenade café including a beach hire shop and toilet – and a bike store including charging points for eBikes - is also proposed on the Prom.

The recreation space on the promenade could also be upgraded to provide a BMX and skateboard track.

Wayfinding could include linking existing cycle routes and footpaths to create clear and defined routes around the town, using enhanced signage and street art to signpost people to the key attractions and High Street.
