Maryort has finally been told how swimming pool money will be spent and it will complete a regeneration programme that should be finished by next summer.

The public and visitors were asked how they would spend the money after the pool project was axed and Cumberland Council believes it has come up with a plan that will have something for all ages.

Included will be a splash pool, BMX and skate park and an upgrade to Shiver Me Timbers.

An outdoor events area is planned for near the aquarium and there will be improvements to the wave Centre including a more adventurous Clip 'n' Climb, a larger gym, a multi-use space, better food and drink facilities and an upgraded indoor play area.

There are also plans for a promenade cafe.

All this will be subject to approval from the Department of Levelling Up. The regeneration cash originally came from the Future High Street Fund but the changes now need to approve the changes.

The Leader of Cumberland Council, Councillor Mark Fryer, said: “We have a plan for Maryport which will appeal to all our community – from children to the more mature in years. We can see the affection and enthusiasm everyone who knows Maryport has for the prom and the harbour, and we have listened when people told us there was not enough for young people to do, so we hope these initiatives will make some new destinations that everyone can enjoy.

“I am hoping for a swift decision from the Government which will allow us to forge ahead with a great development.”

He said the scheme would link the harbour to the town with the plans for the old Carlton cinema as an indoor space.
