A Cumbrian woman is set to host two free sustainable eating events in September to encourage people to eat seasonal, local, and organic foods.

Sharon Watson, founder of the 'green' catering company SLO Food Suppers, will host the events in her Cockermouth home on Saturday, September 9, and Saturday, September 16 from 10 am - 1 pm.

Sharon ran two similar sessions 18 months ago and believes the need to avoid wasting food and eat more sustainably has become even more urgent in that time.

During the two sessions, the Cockermouth cook will share simple, practical tips and techniques for wasting less food and eating more sustainably, including advice on how to best grow your own.

She will also have support from Heather Albion, from Brigham, after she attended the first set of sessions and offered to help with the upcoming events in September.

Sharon said: "The UN's IPPC report in March gave its strongest warning yet that we must reduce our carbon emissions now to prevent the further breakdown of our climate. Looking at the reports of unprecedented drought, wildfires and flooding events across the globe this summer we can understand why.

"Wasted food accounts for approx 20 percent of all the UK's CO2 emissions, the majority of which come from domestic kitchens.

"The good news is that when we reduce our carbon emissions from food, we have the opportunity to eat so much better.

"The atmosphere will be relaxed and supportive with plenty of time for questions. We'll cook and share a delicious seasonal, local, and organic lunch each time. There will be lots of freebies to take away and even a cotton shopping bag to put them in."
