AN investigation has begun after an ‘absolutely disgusting’ incident of fly tipping in Cockermouth, in which around six black sacks full of pizza boxes cut into tiny squares have been dumped in the town.

The bizarre incidence has left many in the town disgusted, after the mound of rubbish was found dumped on the Main Road into town, near to the Laureates Lane estate on Friday, September 8.

Donna Madden, a resident in Cockermouth came across the rubbish last Friday said she was disgusted with the situation and said people who have been involved in the fly tipping should be ashamed of the way the town is being treated like a ‘rubbish tip’.

The hundreds of tiny pieces of pizza box were cut into tiny pieces, which Donna suspects may have been done to hide the identity of the person responsible.

Speaking to the Times and Star, Donna said: “How can people treat our town like a rubbish tip. It's been reported to both the police, Cumberland Council, and our MP.

“It’s absolutely disgusting, they were all cut into small pieces to hide the name but managed to find a few with Domino’s Pizza boxes. why do they need to cut them so small, must want to hide who dumped them. Must be about 6 black sacks full.

“They should be ashamed of themselves.”

The Cockermouth woman reported the issue to Cumbria police and Cumberland Council, with the authority condemning the incident as ‘irresponsible and unneighbourly’.

They have said they are taking this issue seriously, with a full investigation ongoing into the incident.

A Cumberland Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the fly-tipping in Cockermouth which our team are investigating.

“Cumberland Council take fly-tipping seriously, it is irresponsible and un-neighbourly, as it can have detrimental effects to our region, including, encouraging vermin, damaging natural habitats, and can also be hazardous too. “We would like to encourage residents to help keep our area as beautiful as it should be, continue to recycle properly, and if you see any fly-tipping in your area, please report it by visiting our website Cumberland.gov.uk “
