More than 200 people gathered in Cockermouth to mark Remembrance Sunday.

A service was held at the United Reformed Church, where a Roll of Honour was read by town mayor Julie Laidlow.

Cockermouth Mechanics Band then lead the procession along Main Street and up Station Street to the Cenotaph, where wreaths were laid.

Deputy Lord Lieutenant David Beeby laid the first wreath at the cenotaph, which was draped in hundreds of poppies crocheted by the town's WI. He was followed by the mayor then the Duke of Lancaster Regiment, Border Regiment, Royal Naval Association, Royal Air Force Association and Burma Star Association.

Many local groups laid wreaths and some held standards, including the Army Cadet Force, Girlguiding and Scout Association, Cockermouth Titans, Cumbria Police Force, Cumbria Fire Service and mountain rescue.

Mayfield School and the town's Round Table, Rotary, Probus Club, Freemasons, WI, heritage group, Soroptimists, First Responders and Chamber of Trade were also represented.

Cllr Laidlow said: "There was a great turn out, a lot of people in the church and also at the cenotaph.

"It's keeping it's popularity, it's getting busier and busier. Remembrance Sunday affects everyone in different ways  The youngsters are aware of the sacrifices that have been made.

"We were lead by the Mechanics Band, when I looked down Station Street there was a really big procession."

Everyone was touched by hearing all the names on the Roll of Honour she said.

"I had a great great uncle, Moses Clulow, who was on it for the first time this year as the list now includes people that were on war graves commission," she said.

The event is organised by the town council. "It if one of our best days of the year and it's great to see it being so well supported," said Cllr Laidlow.
