Cumberland Council is supporting 'The Big Switch Off' event in Keswick.

The event, a joint initiative between Friends of the Lake District, the National Trust, and Keswick Tourism Association, will commence from 7pm on February 8 until around midnight.

It looks to exhibit the beauty of the night sky while advocating energy conservation.

During the event, residents, and businesses across Keswick are urged to switch their lights off overnight, providing a chance to appreciate the impact on stargazing.

Around 60 lights in the Lake Road, Hope Park, Crow Park, The Headlands, and Lake Road car park areas will be turned off for the event.

The event will affect residents of The Heads, The Headlands, and Elliot Park, and users of Lake Road car park.

For enquiries, you can reach out to the Cumberland Council's Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736 or visit Cumberland Council's website.

Cumberland Council will manage the switch-off of 50 road and footway lights, and 10 car park lights in the designated areas, whereas the remaining lights, under private ownership or managed by Keswick Town Council, will be managed by their respective owners.

Cllr Denise Rollo, executive member for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said: "This Big Switch Off event, aims to raise awareness about the advantages of preserving dark skies for people's enjoyment, health, and well-being.

"It contributes to the flourishing of wildlife and addresses climate change by reducing energy consumption, while boosting visitor footfall over the winter months.

"We hope for widespread support from the local community and businesses."
