A MAJOR event to test a potential parkrun route in Cockermouth saw 150 people turn out in support.

Almost 150 runners, walkers and buggy pushers took to Cockermouth Greenway 5K to test a potential parkrun route on Sunday, February 4.

Sam Ayers, of BodyFit Cumbria said: “A regular parkrun would be fantastic for the town, so we set up two events to test a possible route on the greenway.

"Both events were really popular; and showed that the community feels really strongly about having a parkrun in town.”

Each event was supported by a team of volunteers who assisted with event set up, marshalling, time-keeping, litter picking and packing up. Supporters encouraged and cheered on those taking part, creating a parkrun-like atmosphere.

Sam said: “It has been amazing to have such support, from volunteers turning up early to set up, marshalling and creating a party atmosphere at the turning points at the end of the route, and supporters providing encouragement along the route.

"Eagerness to support a weekly parkrun event in Cockermouth is clear.”

As these events were not part of parkrun they were delivered by BodyFit Cumbria Running Club who provided registration and insurance and ensured the events met UK athletics standards.  Similar to parkrun, participants all received a personal time for completing the event.

Mark Holmes, race director and club chair said: “These have been fantastic events. Well done to everyone who took part."
