People flocked to Maryport’s Shipping Brow Gallery for a free Pop-Up Valuation event.

More than 60 people attended the event on Saturday, organised by Mitchells Auction Company.

It was the first instalment in a series of Pop-Up Valuation events planned throughout the county this year.

Attendees travelled from afar including Penrith, St Bees, and Lorton, and brought various items to be valued ranging from antique dolls and toys to artworks, jewellery, objects of art, collector’s items, and metalware.

Mitchell’s head of antiques & fine art, James Moore, and valuer Claire Machin were kept busy throughout the day.

They began their duties at 11am, and before the doors even opened, a stream of people eagerly lined up with their items.

Notable items of interest included paintings by local artists William Mitchell of Maryport and Percy Kelly.

Speaking about the event, Mr Moore said: "We already offer free drop-in valuations at our Cockermouth saleroom during office hours but we wanted to make it easier for people further afield to access this service too by doing Pop-Up Valuations.

"We're delighted with the number of people who came and the quality of items they brought with them.

"It’s been really worthwhile".

Ms Machin added: "It was great to talk to so many local people and hear the stories behind the items that came in.

"A Border Regiment embroidered picture was another piece of local history rescued from a skip."

Mr Moore also extended his gratitude towards the venue hosts.

He said: "We’re very grateful to Dolly and Brian at Shipping Brow Gallery for hosting us.

"The setting couldn’t have been more perfect."

Mitchells next Pop-Up Valuation event will take place at the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald office on Middlegate in Penrith on March 4 between 10am and 2pm.

People are welcome to drop by with their items, or a photo if they are too big to carry, for a free valuation in return for a donation to Eden Animal Rescue Charity.

Mitchells also continue to offer free valuations at their Cockermouth saleroom during office hours, Monday to Friday.
