Workington Reds have completed their great escape!

Billy Barr's side staged a dramatic comeback at Warrington Town on Saturday to clinch survival in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Reds came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and cap an amazing resurgence under Barr.

Workington were adrift by a double-figures points margin in the winter but have produced a remarkable recovery to secure their status in the division for next season.

Tom Stephenson was their matchwinner at Warrington as he hit the winner ten minutes from time at Cantilever Park.

That came after Carlisle United loanee Jake Allan had started their comeback early in the second half, Josh Palmer then firing Reds level before Stephenson completed the revival.

Workington's win leaves them four points above the relegation zone with one game to go.

And it ensures that next weekend's home game against Leek Town, the final game at Borough Park, can be a celebration without the stress of the relegation battle going down to the final day.

Barr, the former Carlisle United coach, was appointed as Darren Edmondson's successor last November and he and his side were saluted by travelling fans amid emotional scenes at full-time at Warrington.

The Reds boss, speaking to Steve Durham in a club interview after the game, said of Workington's survival: "It means everything.

"It's probably the best [achievement I've had], I have to say.

"I've done last-day survival and relegation, and the emotion that goes into it...

"So I'm so glad it's done. I'm so pleased for the players, staff and the board. And we can enjoy next week now."

Workington had been facing a last-day of nerves when Warrington swept into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Elliot Morris and Reece Daly.

But Reds' fightback got the job done and their result, along with Morpeth Town's 1-0 defeat at Rushall Olympic, meant Workington could no longer be caught in the battle for survival.
