Internet sensations Max and Paddy - two adventurous springer spaniels who get out and about in the Lake District - did the honours of lighting up Keswick for the town's annual switch-on.

More than 1,500 people gathered in Market Square for the event tonight, which was said to be one of the best yet.

Claire Nash, 46, of Wigton, who was with her daughter Amy, 17, and husband Darren, said: "I really enjoyed the evening. It was a lovely atmosphere."

Max is the canine ambassador to Keswick and with more than 5,000 followers on Instagram it's no surprise he and his mischievous sidekick were a hit with the crowd.

They turned on the lights alongside Susan Leighton, Mayor of Keswick.

Tony Lywood, Cumbria County Councillor for the town, said: "It was the busiest, fullest and best one we have had ever. "All the market stall holders are reporting record sales and it was much enjoyed by everybody.

"The whole of the market square was completely full. It was massive, you could hardly move." #

Fortunately, the main event was sandwiched between two bouts of hail and the town were able to enjoy the switch-on in dry weather.

Keswick was voted The Kennel Club's best dog friendly town for an impressive three years.
