Police have named the man who died on the A66 near Keswick today as 53-year-old David Robinson.

Mr Robinson, from Keswick, who police say may have been hit by a HGV, was pronounced dead by paramedics after being found injured at around 7.30am. His name has been released after he was formally identified.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy but officers believe that the driver of the vehicle involved may not have been aware of the collision.

As the investigation got underway this morning, the key Cumbrian road was closed in both directions, between Crosthwaite roundabout and the junction at High Hill.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Police confirmed the force was called at about 7.30am to reports that an injured man on the A66 near to Keswick.

Emergency services attended, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The spokeswoman said: "The family have been informed, and officers are working with them.

"It is believed the man may have been hit by a HGV. It may be possible that the driver was not aware of the collision."

Officers are now appealing for the drivers of any heavy vehicles which travelled along the A66 near Keswick this morning, between the early hours and 7.30am, to get in touch.

Police would also like anyone with information, or who may have dashcam footage of that area between those times, to call PC 1947 Ross on 101.
