Work is being carried out in Keswick to reduce the risk of flooding in the town.
The Environment Agency is removing gravel from the bend on the River Greta at High Hill.
It will increase the river's channel capacity, reducing the flood risk to properties in that area of the town.
The work is expected to be completed by October 13.
Keswick Town Council heard in July that the work was scheduled to be done but there were concerns that, if it did not go ahead as planned, the opportunity to address the situation before the winter could be lost.
The council agreed to seek a permit so it could hire a contractor to do the work on behalf of the town if the agency did not do it.
