Workington Comets will have to wait to attempt to defend their two-point lead in a rearranged Championship Shield final second leg after tonight's planned double header was washed out.

Comets won 46-44 against Lakeside Hammers at Rye House last night and were due to try to maintain that lead tonight in the second leg before facing Lakeside in an outstanding league fixture.

But heavy rain began to fall not long before the scheduled start time and despite both teams agreeing to delay the start of the meeting by half an hour to see if it would ease off or stop, eventually they had to concede defeat and rearrange the fixtures for Monday night (7.30pm start, subject to confirmation).

Comets' slender lead was established with a fine performance at Rye House, despite the visitors losing captain Ty Proctor when he crashed out in his second heat and withdrew from the meeting injured.

Proctor was set to miss out tonight with Tero Aarnio guesting in his place and his fitness will be assessed ahead of the rearranged fixture.

Workington are still set to race the first leg of the Knockout Cup final at Scunthorpe tomorrow (5pm start).
