Workington have it all to do again tomorrow night at Borough Park after being held to a 1-1 draw in an Emirates FA Cup First Round Qualifying tie.

They host Northern League outfit Newcastle Benfield in a replay and will hope to make home advantage count and bank the £6,000 prize money.

Despite so many of the squad getting their first taste of FA Cup football, the Evo-Stik League outfit did enough to see off opposition from two levels below. But they failed to seize the opportunity and, overall, Benfield deserved a replay at the very least.

“I think what we have to do is ensure we make the most of the home tie on Tuesday and it should turn out to be a more positive result. We are still in the FA Cup and certainly hoping to get the important win at the second attempt,” said joint manager Dave Hewson.

“It was a scrappy first half, and we looked rather nervous to be honest, but I got the reaction I demanded after the previous game in terms of work-rate and attitude.

"We just lacked that little bit of quality which should have shone through and made the difference.

“We enjoyed a spell on top in the second half, scored and threatened to do so again but lacked that cutting edge. One more goal, I think, would have finished it off but all credit to them.

"They’re a good outfit, well organised, have some really good players and got themselves back into the game and will fancy themselves on Tuesday.”

Reds had eased in front after a positive start to the second half when Niall Cowperthwaite scored his first goal for the club from close range.

They couldn’t add to the slender lead, though, and were made to pay in the 77th minute when veteran Paul Brayson supplied an inch-perfect pass into Dale Pearson’s path for the equaliser.

Hewson shuffled the starting XI, handing a first-team debut to Nathan Dryden who had played for the reserves the previous evening.

“Nathan came in and has done himself no harm whatsoever, starting the game well,” said Hewson.

“There were spells in the first half when his decision-making wasn’t quite right but he was a constant threat, got balls into the box and can be very pleased with a positive senior debut.”

Hewson will rely on the same squad for the replay, with skipper Gari Rowntree’s fitness due to be assessed before kick-off (7.45pm).
