Derby hero Dan Abram heaped praise on teammate Ellis Gillam after Haven sealed a narrow victory over rivals Workington.

It was Déjà vu for Abram on Sunday as he claimed a 24-22 victory for Haven in the Cumbrian derby at Derwent Park with the final kick of the game.

But Gillam had set up the tight finish by scoring two tries, including one when the tie looked to have got away from Haven.

In the dying minutes, he charged down a kick, collected the ball and strolled over the line to allow Abram's conversion to reduce the gap to just four points.

And, when Danny Green crossed in the corner just before the hooter, Abram had the chance to repeat his heroics from the 14-12 win at the Recreation Ground in March.

Abram said: "If Ellis didn't make that charge down we probably wouldn't have won.

"Ellis is one of those that works hard for the team week in week out and it paid off this week.

"He got two tries and he did excellently to get over the line.

"When we scored I looked up at the scoreboard and knew it would be up to me to kick it."

Abram had never kicked goals in a senior game until this season, but his exploits have quickly made him a fan favourite at Whitehaven.

He said: "It's one of the biggest games I've played in, it's such a surreal feeling to kick the winning conversion twice.

"It's really nice to have the fans on side and have that faith from the other players and the coach."

Coach Carl Forster, speaking after the derby, said Abram was "super confident he would nail the kick".

Abram said: "I was nervous throughout, it's such a big game. It means so much to us as well as the fans.

"Going into the kick you have to be confident, if you're down on yourself you're not going to get it.

"[The responsibility] is something I've never had before. It's nice for Carl to put the faith in me, I'm enjoying it."

Haven's attention now turns to London Skolars' visit to the Recreation Ground on Sunday at 3pm.

Forster's side have won their last four games and sit fifth in League One, the final play-off position.

"We've got the bare 19 at the minute, but confidence in the camp is huge," said Abram. "We knew from the start we might have a small squad but we're aiming for promotion.

"We had a chat and Carl said we've got 13 cup finals, we've now won four of those. We've got to keep winning our cup finals."

Haven's tie against Bradford Bulls, which was scheduled for Sunday, August 5, has moved to Saturday, August 4 at Odsal Stadium. Kick off is 3pm.

The change was requested by the Bulls to avoid the Challenge Cup semi-final double header to be played at the Macron Stadium, Bolton, on the Sunday.
