Simon Frazer and Karl Newton are the new West Coast Thermal doubles champions in the Workington Pool League.

The final eight teams met this week to determine the 2018 winner.

In the best of three frames, the first quarter-final saw Frazer and Newton take on Grant Porter and Sarah Messenger.

Frazer and Newton took the match 2-0 after a superb effort from Porter to take out a clearance but unfortunately broke down.

In the second match Andy Druggan and Mike McDonald defeated Grapes veterans Brian Audley and Ian Carter 2-0.

The third match saw 2017/18 captains and Cumbria Trophy winner John Burns paired with Alex Knox to defeat Paul Johnston and Neil Henderson 2-0.

In the final quarter-final Shaun Ayre and Steve O’Hagan faced Station Road D veterans Ian Johnston and Dave Edwards. In a close match, and tied at 1-1, O’Hagan and Ayre had the opportunity to take the match but a miss placed shot meant Edwards and Johnston were able to close out the match 2-1.

In the semi-finals Frazer and Newton carried on their attacking play against Druggan and McDonald. Newton’s miss placed positional shot to the black left him in trouble until he played the full length double to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second frame Frazer went on the attack but after missing the final ball gave his opponents the chance to level the tie but when Druggan attempted a safety shot it gave Frazer the simplest of pots to progress himself and Newton to the final 2-0.

In the second semi Johnston and Edwards got off to a good start against Burns and Knox winning the first frame thanks to Edwards clearance.

In the second frame a tactical battle saw Burns and Knox get the opportunity to level the tie until a surprising missed gave Ed-wards and Johnston a 2-0 victory.

The final saw Packhorse’s Frazer and Newton take on Station Road D’s Edwards and Johnston. Frazer and Newton were the attacking pairing and this was rewarded as they took a 2-0 lead and on the brink of winning the best of five.

In the third frame Edwards and Johnston fought hard to get back in the game and in a frame they controlled they final got a frame on the board to make it 2-1.

In the fourth frame Johnston was attempting to clear the table but went in off taking on the black ball. Up stepped Newton to take the remaining balls and pot the black to give them a 3-1 victory and their first doubles title.
