In a lopsided new Conference Premier Division season, all three Cumbrian sides start with home games.

Egremont, Kells and Wath Brow will stage their first league games on their own turf.

For the floating voter, who likes his amateur RL fare, it’s not ideal when all three have 2.30pm kick-offs.

Strictly speaking, an enthusiast could get round all three venues during the 80 minutes, but would much sooner stick to one of them for the duration.

Mind you, given the weather situation, we might be lucky if one of the game survives tomorrow.

Egremont are due to kick-off against Myton Warriors from Hull and, even if the ground is passed fit, there’s the problem of a team travelling all the way from Humberside.

Assistant coach Paul Henson said: “The pitch was rock hard in midweek but without any covering of snow.

“I imagine it will be 70-30 against being on and Myton will want to know tonight because of the travelling involved.

“We were looking forward to this opening game after two warm-up wins.

“After putting 50 points on a half-strength Askam side, we beat Hensingham 42-16 in the Jackie Davidson Memorial game last weekend.

"We didn’t have our full team out in either game but were going into the Myton match with virtually a full squad to pick from.”

Wath Brow Hornets start with a visit from newly-promoted Underbank Rangers.

From Holmfirth in West Yorkshire, Rangers are planning to set off at 9am ahead of the clash at Red Beck.

There was snow on the pitch earlier in the week and much will depend on today’s weather.

Possibly the pick of the three games might be Kells’ clash with Rochdale Mayfield.

It’s an intriguing one given that Mayfield have regularly proved to be a bogey team for Kells and the other west Cumbrian sides in the competition.

Kells coach Peter Smith will have enough on his plate keeping his players’ feet firmly on the ground as they face a mouth-watering clash in a fortnight against Toronto Wolfpack.

Keeping them focused on the bread-and-butter of league rugby for a fortnight will be the task for Smith and his assistants.

They go into the game on the back of a Challenge Cup victory over the British Army.
