Workington Town chief Mark Fryer has hailed his side’s rollercoaster season as remarkable ahead of Sunday’s semi-final clash at Featherstone.

Town will travel to The Big Fellas Stadium in West Yorkshire to take on Featherstone Rovers in the semi-final of the Championship Shield (3pm ko).

A sensational run of seven wins from their last 10 games ensured Workington finished fourth.

Featherstone, who have beaten Town three times this season, topped the Shield table after winning six of their last 10 matches.

The last meeting between the two sides was a close encounter with Rovers, under new manager Jon Sharp, clinching a 24-10 victory for visitors Featherstone last month.

Mark Fryer, Town’s vice-chairman, said: “It’s been a remarkable season. There have been ups and downs. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster.

“The bonus was to finish where we did and getting extra funding.

“It’s a double bonus getting into the semi-final.

“There is no doubt that Featherstone are a good side. They feel as if they have underachieved. It’s up to us to give a good account of ourselves.

“We have got to go flat out.”

Fryer added that the club have already started preparations for the 2016 season.

“The goal was to make sure we stayed in the division,” he said.

“We have almost now got one eye on next season. That’s how we have got to work.

“We are looking for players and sponsors.”
