ONE of Workington Comets’ all-time greatest riders is back at Derwent Park for their special 40th anniversary meeting.

The meeting will be attended by Australian Lou Sansom, who rode in the first match against Berwick and became the top points scorer and appearance maker from the first era of the Comets.

Sansom, now 63, has jetted in from Australia for tomorrow night’s meeting and will also be taking part in a question and answer session in the Washington Central Hotel tonight, starting at 7.45pm.

Speaking to Times & Star Sport this week, Sansom said: “It is great to be coming back here after so many years and it will be interesting to see what the track is like compared to 1970.

“I have been told they have changed the corners to make it a bit easier and less dangerous.”

Also at Derwent Park will be many Comets heroes from the past 40 years and the night will include a 12-man individual competition.

The anniversary meeting, sponsored by Moss Bay Metals, gets under way at 6.30pm and will feature the current Comets team along with old Comets favourites Kauko Nieminen, James Wright, Rusty Harrison, Joe Haines and popular 2009 guest rider Mark Lemon.
