WORKINGTON Town have signed Australian utility player Steve Scanlan.

Scanlan, 23, a hooker or lock forward, has played for New Haven Warriors in the USA Super League.

The former Leeds Rhinos Academy player said: “I’m delighted to have signed as this is a club that’s going places. They have a system to move forward.

“I have been training all week and staying with Andrew Beattie and Liam Campbell in Workington to get a feel for the place.

“I should be available to play in three or four weeks’ time. I can’t wait to get started.”

Sydney born-and-bred, Scanlan learned his trade in the A Grade sides at Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and Belrose Eagles, winning the A Grade rookie of the year and forward of the year awards in 2001 and 2003.

Town coach Ged Stokes said: “Steve is a good addition to the squad and the first of some new key signings.

“We’ll be targeting bringing in some other new faces before the NL2 season starts, so there’s competition for every position.”
