Workington Reds’ new signing Garry Thompson says he still feels sharp and is looking forward to the challenge at Borough Park.
The former Morecambe midfielder signed for Reds last week after his release from the League Two club and was due to make his debut at the postponed clash with Mickleover Sports on Saturday.
But Cumbrian-born Thompson, 38, says he is ready to go and believes he still has plenty to offer.
“If I had played on Saturday, I think it would have been the first time I had played for a team in Cumbria which would have been nice but the elements saw to that,” said Thompson. “But there’s always the next game and we keep moving forward.
“It is part of the job to look after yourself. I had a bad injury last season but you have to be disciplined and methodical in what you do to be fit and available week in and week out.
“I think I’ve done that over a period of 18-20 years and I still feel good, sharp and quick so, as long as I keep feeling like that, I’ll play as long as I can.
“Morecambe stood by me when I snapped my achilles at the end of last season. I got a contract until December and they allowed me to come in and get fit but, when it came to a decision, it transpired I wasn’t offered anything which was disappointing.
“But I’ve worked so hard over the last six months to get fit and I wasn’t ready to call it a day so I find myself here and looking forward to the challenge ahead.”
