Officials from Maryport ARLFC have hailed Workington Town’s Community Club Takeover day as a huge success.
The new initiative, which sees a local amateur club take over Town for a day got off to a flying start on Sunday when Maryport were the first club to attend.
And Maryport secretary Ian Ivison, said it was a real success for both clubs.
“All of our kids absolutely loved it, they had a great day, especially the kids that played in the game before the Town match and at half time,” he said. “They got to walk on the field with the teams and they were all full of it.
“I think it’s a fantastic idea and we had a great response from our parents.
“When we have tried to organise things from the club in the past it was hard to motivate parents to get involved but we had a great response to this.”
With former Maryport star Stevie Scholey now a firm favourite on the Derwent Park terraces, Ivison is hoping he will inspire the next generation.
He added: “Stevie came along to a training session on the Monday before the takeover day and we told the kids that he used to play for Maryport and started off just like them. They were loving it and really impressed.”
The invitation is extended to all local clubs in the area. If you would like to book your club in for a takeover email graemepeers
