Workington Town have paid tribute to their former coach Maurice Bamford, who has died at the age of 83.
The ex-Leeds, Wigan and Great Britain boss Bamford is perhaps best remembered for transforming the fortunes of Halifax but in a 16-year career also coached Dewsbury, Bramley, Huddersfield, Wigan, Bradford and Halifax, in a 16-year career.
Town chairman Les Smallwood said: “Maurice was respected at Workington and throughout rugby league as passionate, knowledgeable and a great storyteller about our game.
“Not only did he coach at the highest level but his involvement with rugby league continued in developing the sport and in media promoting it.
“Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
A statement from Leeds added: “It was with much sadness that the club has learned of the death of former head coach Maurice Bamford, after losing his long battle with cancer.”
Bamford coached Wigan for 12 months from 1981-82 and was in charge twice at Headingley, from 1983-85 and 1986-88.
He was Great Britain coach between 1984 and 1987 and, after retiring, began a new career as an author and match reporter.
A Leeds spokesperson said: “On behalf of everyone associated with the club, we send our deepest sympathies to Maurice’s family and friends.”
Leeds players will wear black armbands in Sunday’s game against London Broncos at the Magic Weekend as a mark of respect.
