A NEW captain has been appointed for the 2021 season at a Cumbrian golf club.

Ross Johnston will lead the Maryport Golf Club mens team this year with Mark Cartwright as vice captain.

His current handicap is a 2.8 index, 3 at Maryport.

Johnston uses the Titleist 917 as his driver.

When asked who his favourite player is to compete against he said: "It's got to be Blake Rooney, he's been my biggest rival over the years and we've had some good battles."

Johnston said that the most special course he has had the chance of competing on is The Fidre at Archerfield Links

He added that his dream course to play on outside of the Augusta would be Valderama in Spain.

When asked what he wants to achieve as captain, Johnston said: "To keep the club moving forward - we had a good season last year considering Covid-19, fingers crossed we are back open soon and we can keep pushing forward and building on the membership and visitors numbers. "It's an opportunity for me to win my own captain’s weekend after I failed at the first attempt."

A spokesperson for the club said: "We’d like to wish Ross and his team a very successful year and we are sure you’ll show them your full support in building on the great work done last year "
