Aspatria skipper Luke Johnson has been praised after becoming the first player to break through the 1,000 points barrier for his club.

The half-back has racked up 1,035 points since joining Aspatria back in 2011 and in another incredible achievement has never missed a game since.

Club secretary Craig Hamilton said Johnson is the first to break the 1,000 barrier since the club re-formed and he is unsure as to whether it has even been done before.

"This is Luke's sixth season with us and he is still only 21 so he was just 16 when he started," explained Hamilton.

"He has been captain since his second season which just shows how much he is held in regard by everyone.

"He is a great leader who leads by example and can do the tough stuff as well as score the points.

Predominantly the stand-off is a goalkicker but he has also racked up his fair share of tries, seven so far this term, with 25 goals.

Johnson broke through the 1,000 points barrier in the Iggesund Cumberland League game against Broughton Red Rose recently.

The youngster, who lives a stone's throw away from the Aspatria pitch, is dedicated to the club.

Hamilton added: "His devotion to the cause is such that he travelled back from Yorkshire, where he was spending a weekend away, to play in the Flimby game and then travelled back after the game."

Johnson's best season was in 2015 when he racked up 15 tries and 99 goals, plus two one-pointers for a total of 262 points, which he looks on course to top this term.

Aspatria head to Lowca on Saturday for a league fixture, kick off 2.30pm.
