A fun day - held to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee - was such a success it will become an annual event, agreed Cockermouth town councillors.

More than 500 attended the picnic in Memorial Gardens during the Bank Holiday weekend. Cockermouth Mechanics Band played, there was a funfair and children's fancy dress competition.

The event was one of various things organised by the town council to celebrate the royal anniversary.

At a recent town council meeting, Cllr Alan Smith said the fun day had been well attended and well received. He suggested it should become a regular town council event.

Councillors agreed it should become an annual event.

Following the meeting, Mayor Andrew Semple said: "Things like the Jubilee celebrations and the success of the picnic remind you that there's a need to facilitate getting people together.

"It's relatively simply to do and is great for the community.

"We tend to do things in the winter - fireworks and the Christmas lights switch on. It would be great to also have something in the summer."

The event was mainly aimed at families with younger children but everyone is welcome, said Cllr Semple.
