THE Red Arrows, an RAF parachute display and dogs - both pedigree and scruffy - will all contribute to a free community fun day in July.

Maryport Rescue, a volunteer group involved in sea, flood and mud rescue, is holding its second fun day following the success of last year's event.

Spokeswoman Tracy Messenger said although entry is free to the harbourside event, donations added up to £2,000 and the team hoped to do even better this time.

The fun day will include a fly past by the famous RAF acrobatic team, the Red Arrows.

The RAF parachute team will also be there along with a lot of craft stalls, fairground rides and live music, with entertainment for young and old.

Adults, children, individuals and organisations are being asked to form tug-o-warteams to compete for the Neil Marland Memorial Shield.

This is a trophy being presented for the first time in memory of a long-serving rescue volunteer, Neil Marland, who died tragically this year at the age of only 41.

Tracy said the shield will be competed for in different events each year.

Run in conjunction with the fun day is another popular event from last year - the Maryport Scrufts Dog Show.

Pedigree pooches as well as scruffier pets will be awarded points in this free for all event.

Car parking will be provided on Miltoft but people coming to town from out of Maryport are being asked to consider taking public transport.

There will be food and drink available but the three cafes on the harbour, including the aquarium, will all be open.

"We want this to be a day to celebrate the whole harbour," Tracy said.
